âJESUS, BOB, YOU SING âMAN OF CONSTANT SORROWâ LIKE AN operatic aria. Itâs a Southern mountain song, for Godâs sake.â
âWhat do you want me to do, sing it like I just had my throat operated on, the way you do?â
Jerry looked exasperated. âLook, thatâs the way itâs supposed to be done⦠Listen to Mike Seeger or the Carter Family do it.â
âWell, goddamn it, Iâm neither the Carter Family or Mike Seeger. If you want to do it like a damned hillbilly, you can do it alone.â
He looked thoughtful for a moment, then: âIâve been thinking about that, Bob.â
I was startled. âWhat dâyou mean?â
He sat down on the desk, scrutinizing the sound hole of his guitar. Then he looked up. âIt doesnât swing, I mean. I⦠well, hell! Thatâs just it; it doesnât swing anymore, not the way I want it.â
âBig thing to say⦠Why?â
He ran his fingers across the frets, picking out the runs of âMan of Constant Sorrow,â stopping partway through to retune an errant string. âWell, you know the âwallsâ you talk about knocking down? It seems to me we did pretty well for a while; weâve got all those down, but there are new ones.â
âNew ones?â
âWell, frankly, I feel like Iâm being held back. Not that we donât hit it off pretty well as a duet, but thatâs established now; in fact⦠stagnating. I want to move ahead. Youâve got your writing, man, and youâre not doing too bad from what Iâve seen⦠but the singing is a pastime for you⦠Anyway, itâs what I want to do. Itâs kind of hard to explain, so I wonât go into it, but I feel like weâve come to a standstill, or at least I have. âSanty Anoâ and âCotton Fieldsâ are fine in their way, but they just scratch the surface. Iâve been studying and reading⦠listening, and Iâm just beginning to find out how near the surface they are. Itâs an art, Bob, one that will take a long time to learn well, but thatâs what I want to do. Soâ¦â He scratched the strings, then put down the guitar.
âSo⦠I guess I understand. It doesnât even surprise me too much, really. Anyway, good luck, you know.â
He clasped my shoulder. âThanks.â
I sort of half smiled. It seemed the appropriate thing to do. âWant to make it down to the coffeehouse or something?â
âNo; Iâve got work to begin.â
âRight. See you later.â
